Installing Laminate Flooring in Wet Areas

Laminate flooring is fast becoming the best option when choosing flooring for any room because of its low cost and versatility. While this type of flooring is normally used in the non-“wet” areas such as living rooms and bedrooms, laminate floors can be installed in the kitchen, laundry area, or even the bathroom, provided that you follow certain installation guidelines. Remember that laminate floors have excellent water resistance compared to wood flooring. If you are trying to achieve the look of wooden floors, but would not risk ruining a costly engineered hardwood flooring, you may opt buying wood laminate flooringinstead. However, you must prevent water from getting underneath the floor.

Here are some things that you should keep in mind when installing laminate floors in the “wet” areas of your home.

Do Not Use Water-Based Glues

When using glues, it is always recommended to use urethane-based adhesives that have less moisture. Remember that moisture is not good for laminate flooring, so avoid any adhesives that may introduce water to the flooring. At any cost, avoid any floor glue that has water unless it is recommended by the manufacturer.

Check if the Subfloor is Level

Remember that it is a must to check if the subfloor of level when you attach a flooring, whether that is wood, laminate, or vinyl plank flooring. The subfloor is the preexisting floor where you attach the flooring. To check if the subfloor is level, place a straight piece of wood (2x4 would do) across the floor diagonally. Put a level on top of it. If the floor is not level, you will need to fill in the low spots with leveling compounds that you can buy in most hardware stores.

Seal Expansion Gaps

When installing laminate flooring in wet areas such as the bathroom or laundry area, it is imperative to use silicone seals on the expansion gaps, or you would lose the manufacturer’s warranty for the floor. Better yet, buy laminates that have waxed edges and water resistant cores to prevent the possibility of water damage to the material.

Installing Laminate Floor in the Kitchen

If you choose to install this type of flooring in the space where your refrigerator is, use a sealant to seal water supply lines going to the icemaker and glue locking system in front of the water dispenser as well to avoid leaks.

For areas near the sink or the dishwasher, seal the expansion gap in front of the cabinets with a silicone that is mildew-resistant and glue the locking system in front of the sink and the dishwasher.
